The new Viagra was introduced in March. It is an erection-enhancing drug that was originally intended to be a quick fix for those suffering from premature ejaculation (PE).
“We want to make the drug more accessible to men that can easily get a prescription and use it. Men that would like to buy it at a discounted price can do so,” says Mark C. Smith, MD, director of the Center for Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Health, based at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Virginia Beach.
The drug was created to treat men with erectile dysfunction. It works by blocking an enzyme in the penis that produces blood. The drug helps men get and maintain an erection, which is necessary for sexual intercourse.
“It has revolutionized the way we treat erectile dysfunction,” says Dr. Smith. “Our primary goal in treating erectile dysfunction is to increase the amount of blood that can flow into the penis.”
Dr. Smith is a board-certified urologist specializing in reproductive medicine and reproductive endocrinology. He is board-certified in male sexual function and reproductive endocrinology and is a member of the American Urological Association.
“We are thrilled to be able to introduce this drug to the general public and also to the entire medical community,” he says. “It is an important tool for many men and is a lifesaver for many of them.”
In November, the FDA approved Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The drug is also marketed as a treatment for the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.

While Viagra may not work for everyone, it can help improve sexual function and desire. Viagra may not work for men who have diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure. For example, a man with diabetes may need to take medication to manage his condition.
“It is important to understand that Viagra can only treat ED and not treat PE. It is only effective when the man is sexually stimulated,” says Dr. “This medication is only effective in those with a reduced ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
